SOIL MICROBE BASICS

Beneficial Soil Microbes for Plant Health, Pest and Disease Suppression

Mandatory Prerequisite for Other Courses

This is the mandatory class that is required for those wishing to participate in the Group Soil & Compost Microbial Assessment Sessions.

Understand the basic principles of why having sufficient biomass and biodiversity is critical to plant health, pest and disease suppression and how and when we would measure and check our soils, composts & liquid extracts.

The preparatory course will cover:

  • How microbes are the nutrient conversion system of soils
  • How the different communities of beneficial microorganisms change during the seasons
  • What these microbes produce and why they are so important to soil/plant health
  • Basic soil mineral profiles – importance of getting the basics right
  • Mineral availability dependency on soil pH
  • Microbial dependency on soil mineral profiles and organic matter/humus content
  • Impact on chlorinated water on soil microbes
  • A baseline of healthy microbial biomass & diversity by different food groups
  • How to take soil, compost and liquid extract samples for group assessments
  • The basics of microbial assays – the handling, dilution rate and assessment protocols

Workshop structure is both presentation & microscope assay projection.

Workshop will be held at:

Tasmanian Gourmet Garlic Farm
